Grill More Than Just Your Meats

The Fourth of July is just around the corner, and I, for one, am looking forward to the long weekend. I'm sure many of you are finalizing your menus for your picnics and barbecues and are figuring out the best strategy for securing a prime spot for watching those fireworks. As you consider what to throw on the grill next weekend, consider doing something a little different -- grill your breakfast! This is something my boyfriend and I did when I visited him over Memorial Day weekend, and I say, if the weather's nice enough, go right ahead and grill your breakfast every weekend!

Creating and maintaining this blog has given me the perfect reason to get out of my apartment and try as many restaurants in New York as possible. And after talking about my adventures with the Lehigh Dinner Club (LDC) so much, I have, somehow, managed to become one of the founding members of another Dinner Club unofficially associated with my Alma Mater. This second Dinner Club consists of another group of Lehigh alumni who also happen to be fellow Chi Omega Sisters (Jena, Linda, and Sarah). The Phi Mu (our Chapter of Chi Omega) Dinner Club (PMDC) tries to meet once a month in order to try various cuisines from around the world.

As I was looking through my digital photos the other day, I realized that I completely forgot to write about my birthday lunch at Masso with my friends Elizabeth and Meg! With all of the birthday craziness and the jam-packed schedule of month-long birthday celebrations, I'm honestly not surprised that I skipped over a restaurant review. I'm trying to be better about writing timely posts, but what can I say? I live in the city that never sleeps, so that means I never sleep either...

As soon as I returned from my vacation in Fort Lauderdale, my brain and my stomach decided to team up for the purpose of convincing me that I wanted to eat mass quantities of tacos as soon as possible. Eventually, this craving was overpowered in quick succession by the consumption of Indian food and then the desire for and devouring of a cheeseburger. Now I'm back to square one without the adequate supplies in my kitchen for tacos (and, really, who wants to do all that work when it would just be me eating them?) or the option of having them delivered to my apartment. Instead, I had to compromise and work with what I had.

Here it is, June, and I'm only now getting around to writing up my review of the April meeting of the Lehigh Dinner Club. I could have just scrapped the review since a) so much time has passed between then and now and b) the food was not that memorable, but a certain member of the Dinner Club (*cough*Brian*cough*) inquired about the write-up at our May meeting (which, of course, needs a write-up of its own), so I feel obligated to say something. There are quite a few favorable reviews about the restaurant out there, so I'm going to chalk our dinner up to an "off night."

Mark your calendars, everyone! This Friday, June 5, is National Donut Day! According to the Wikipedia article, the holiday started in 1938 "as a fund raiser for the Chicago Salvation Army" whose "goal was to help the needy during the Great Depression, and to honor the Salvation Army 'Lassies' of World War I, who served doughnuts to soldiers behind the front lines in France." (Hmm... you learn something new every day...)

Remember when I told you that I would reveal what I did with those caramelized onions I made a couple of weeks ago? Well, the time is now! I created a dish that can really only be classified as comfort food -- Pan-Fried Chorizo with Caramelized Onions over Mashed Potatoes!

When I think about it, the dish is a perfect culinary representation of my family. If you're a regular reader of Taste As You Go, then you already know that the caramelized onions represent my mother. Chorizo (chouri├žo) is something I grew up eating (and loving it!), as it's one of the main ingredients in the Portuguese dishes my father and my grandmother would make. Grandma would throw in some chouri├žo (pronounced "shu-REES" in her kitchen) in with the scrambled eggs at breakfast during my visits to my grandparents' house during the summer. Heaven!
