Foodbuzz Sure Knows How to Throw a Party

I'm kicking myself as I'm writing this very belated post about the fête thrown by Foodbuzz at David Burke Townhouse earlier this month in celebration of surpassing their one millionth food blog post milestone. Why am I kicking myself? Because Sue of Food Network Musings, who dutifully posted her write-up of the event the day after it happened, is expecting "a detailed report on everything from the hamachi to the butterscotch panna cotta" from me and I don't want to disappoint her! Now that weeks have passed between then and now, let's see how I do.

As I was catching up with Devon and Ryan at the door, I tried a Crusted Crabcake with Poppyseed Honey and Kumquat-Jalapeno Jam. I figured this out after the fact... after I ate two of them. I was so blown away by the flavor of the jam that I didn't quite hear the server tell me I was eating crab. Once I checked my coat, I moved on to the Hamachi with Watermelon (pictured above). This was definitely one of my favorite hors d'oeurves of the evening, as I felt the watermelon really freshened up the flavors.

Sue and I (click for a fabulous picture of the two of us) grabbed a couple of glasses of Prosecco from the bar before making our way to the "main event" at the back of the restaurant. We didn't get too far...

The Beef Dumplings were deep-fried, crispy, and delicious. Of course, I was so eager to try them that I burned my mouth a bit. That'll teach me! After allowing myself some time (not much) to recover, I tried a skewer of Spicy Citrus Shrimp. The heat wasn't too overwhelming and the shrimp was cooked perfectly. Yes, I ate more than one.

The main room was pretty crowded by the time Sue and I made our way back there. Since she had already done the rounds to see "what was what," I let her navigate me from one food station to the next.

Entering the room, we found the first table of seafood offerings: Scallops Ceviche with Ginger and an assortment of Sushi. We bumped into Christo from ChezWhat? who told us that we had to try the Truffle Pineapple Sauce being served with fresh shellfish at the back table.

The Truffle Pineapple Sauce looked like butter and tasted like heaven. I probably would have eaten it directly out of that bowl if I were allowed to! But I behaved myself and had the server drizzle some of the sauce over the Fresh Lobster and Fresh Crab and Jumbo Shrimp that I had piled onto my plate.

Feeling a little overwhelmed by the food and the number of people in the room, Sue and I wandered over to one of the small tables at the back of the room, which is where we ran into Sarah from Tales of Expansion and where we met Emily and Mark from The Gourmand & the Peasant. That is also where I met my first Lychee Martini. Why, hello there! Where have you been all my life?

Just when I thought I couldn't possibly stuff any more food into my body, I spied the meat carving station.

Roast Turkey at the Foodbuzz Cocktail Party at David Burke Townhouse - Photo by Taste As You Go

I skipped the Salmon with Horseradish Sauce (someone remind me to tell the story of how I ruined salmon for myself... and my boyfriend) and asked for a slice of the Roast Turkey. They were out of the beef for the time being, so Heinrihs gave me a few extra slices. He later came over to deliver some slices of the beef that had just been brought out from the kitchen. Such service!

Heinrihs was a good sport about the picture-taking. I think he must have posed for at least five shots with me. That's because I kept laughing every time Sue told me to lick my lips. Speaking of licking my lips... let's skip ahead to dessert!

Fried Cream Puffs at the Foodbuzz Cocktail Party at David Burke Townhouse - Photo by Taste As You Go

The Apple Tartlette was delicate and crisp. A great start to the deluge of desserts. We had heard that the bartender at the front of the restaurant was making the Lychee Martinis with actual lychees in them, so before we committed to any more dessert, Sue and I went back up front for another drink. Okay, okay, so we grabbed a couple of warm Fried Cream Puffs on our way. Who could resist those?!?

Lychee Martinis at the Foodbuzz Cocktail Party at David Burke Townhouse - Photo by Taste As You Go

Now that's what I'm talking about. My second Lychee Martini was infinitely better than the first because 1) it had a lychee as a garnish, 2) it was cold, and 3) the accent of fresh thyme was much more pronounced. With our cocktails in hand, we headed back into the den of dessert... which really only lead us to the bit of hallway connecting the front of the restaurant to the back. Turns out, that was the best place to stand because we got first dibs on all of the dessert coming out of the kitchen!

Cheesecake Lollipops of various flavors. I snagged one covered with chocolate and one covered with cherry. As you can see, I had a bit of trouble juggling the cocktail, the dessert, and the camera.

The pictures come out much better when you hand the camera off to someone else. And, I had a hand free to grab another Fried Cream Puff! But wait! There's more!

By this time, Sue and I were feeling pretty full, so we decided to split the Butterscotch Panna Cotta and the Nutella Milkshake. When the tray of Grapefruit and Crème Fraîche Bites came by, the voice inside my head told me to let the tray pass me, but Sue convinced me that I couldn't leave the restaurant without trying it. I'm glad I did because the citrus dessert wasn't as heavy as I thought it would be - or as rich as I thought it would be - and was the perfect "last course" of the night.

Thank you, Foodbuzz, for throwing a fantastic party and for continuing to give me the opportunity to step foot in restaurants I otherwise couldn't afford and the chance to meet (and reunite with) other incredible food bloggers! I can't wait until the next event!

Weekend Brunch in New York City, Three Ways

Like most people stuck at work on the Friday before a holiday weekend, I've been fixated on the clock on the corner of my computer screen. Memorial Day Weekend (and the unofficial start to summer) is almost here. While I will be heading out of town for some much-needed time out of the city, I will not be boarding the Jitney on my way to a fabulous vacation house in the Hamptons.

I encourage those staying in New York (and those visiting for the long weekend) to enjoy the rare quiet that falls on the city on Memorial Day Weekend. Take advantage of the situation and partake in a quintessential weekend activity in New York -- brunch. If you're looking for a new place to eat, consider these three restaurants that I had the opportunity of trying within the last few weeks.

Penelope on Lexington Avenue in New York, NY - Photo by Taste As You Go

Penelope

To celebrate my friend Lauren's birthday (albeit slightly belatedly), she and I met up for brunch at Penelope. It was a perfect Sunday for brunch, so there was already a crowd of people waiting outside the restaurant for their names to be called. After putting our names on the list, we popped across the street to Brasil Coffee House to grab some much-needed caffeine and to catch up with each other before sitting down to our meal. About forty minutes later (not too bad given the number of people standing on the sidewalk), we were seated.

I'm not sure whether it was because we had already drank our weight in luscious coffee or whether it was because we weren't feeling all that adventurous, but neither Lauren nor I ordered off of Penelope's $13 Prix-Fixe Brunch Menu, which features Nutella French Toast and Pumpkin Waffles. Instead, we played it low-key.

Eggs Any Style at Penelope in New York, NY - Photo by Taste As You Go

Penny Egg Sandwich at Penelope - Photo by Taste As You Go

I ordered the Eggs Any Style (I had mine scrambled) with toast and homemade French fries ($7.75), while Lauren opted for the Penny Egg Sandwich with bacon on an English muffin ($7.95). Needless to say, we were a little underwhelmed. My scrambled eggs were dry and cold by the time I got them and I confess that I spent most of my time eating the French fries... because they were there. After watching the table next to us get served their food, we decided that we learned a valuable lesson. If there's a crowd of people waiting outside, there must be a reason. People in New York won't wait around for substandard food. So, next time, we're going to stick to the offerings on the Brunch Menu and order two rounds of that Nutella French Toast and ignore that inner voice warning us that it might be too sweet to handle!

Orange Juice at Cowgirl in New York, NY - Photo by Taste As You Go

Cowgirl

New York, NY

The following Sunday, Lauren and I met up for brunch again in honor of her friend Adam's first visit to New York City. This time, we braved the pouring rain and trekked down to the West Village to Cowgirl. We enjoyed our beverages and got a kick out of the tiny plastic bull riding the straw in Adam's orange juice as we perused the Brunch Menu.

French Toast at Cowgirl in New York, NY - Photo by Taste As You Go

There were so many delicious-sounding options that it took us a while to decide, but I think we all chose wisely. Lauren ordered the Paris, Texas French Toast ($9.95), which was served with a bowl of fresh fruit salad. The combination of the "secret egg batter" that the Texas toast was dipped into, the powdered sugar, and the maple syrup produced a very sweet breakfast. I managed the couple of bites that Lauren shared with me, but I'm not sure I would have been able to eat the whole thing.

The Southerner at Cowgirl in New York, NY - Photo by Taste As You Go

Adam was torn between The Northerner (three-egg omelet stuffed with spinach, mushrooms, and Jack cheese; $10.95) and The Southerner (three-egg omelet stuffed with sweet vidalia onion, tomato, bacon, and cheddar; $10.95). When Lauren and I reminded him about the importance of bacon at brunch, he finally chose The Southerner. They don't mess around with the omelets at Cowgirl! Despite the bulk of the omelet, Adam cleaned his plate and left no morsel uneaten. I think it's safe to say he enjoyed his meal.

Huevos Rancheros at Cowgirl in New York, NY - Photo by Taste As You Go

As for me, I opted for the Huevos Rancheros ($9.95). In a restaurant called Cowgirl, how could I not? I was served a plate full of corn tortillas that were piled with black beans, adobo salsa, two fried eggs, and melted cheddar. (Trust me, the eggs are under there.) Toss some potatoes and a biscuit on the side and you have a Meal. There was just a tad too much food on my plate, so I didn't clear it like Adam did, but I ate most of it! It was so good that I hated walking away from the table knowing that I hadn't finished it all. But I did leave with the satisfaction of knowing that I inspired the couple at the table next to us to order up the Huevos Rancheros for themselves. The trip to the West Village in the rain was worth it for the food and definitely worth it for the company.

La Giara
501 Third Avenue
(212) 726-9855

Rounding out my whirlwind reviews of brunches that took place weeks ago (*blush*) is my review of my birthday brunch at La Giara with my friends Candice and Mary Catherine. I initially started researching restaurants that were offering a Mother's Day special since my birthday fell on the Monday following the holiday. Eventually, all of that research led me to La Giara and their unlimited refill mimosa brunch, conveniently offered on Saturdays and Sundays.

As we were looking over the menu, we were given a complimentary basket of various breads and muffins. A perfect offering to help us begin laying down a foundation of food in our stomachs that would help soak up the mimosas. Let me tell you -- the servers at La Giara are very generous with their refills. I don't think our glasses were ever allowed to sit empty longer than 10 seconds, which was really impressive given the number of people who were packed into the restaurant for Mother's Day.

Tomato and Basil Omelette at La Giara in New York, NY - Photo by Taste As You Go

Candice ordered the Tomato & Basil Omelet ($7.50), which was served with a small salad of mixed greens. I loved the fact that Candice pushed the salad off her plate to make room for the side order of bacon ($2.00) that she ordered and offered us her salad. Seriously, brunch just isn't the same without bacon. We all ordered it.

French Toast with Bacon at La Giara in New York, NY - Photo by Taste As You Go

As is evidenced by the picture I had Mary Catherine take of her brunch choice: French Toast with Whipped Butter, Maple Syrup, and Fresh Berries ($7.50). The chef must have been feeling festive when plating the French toast since it also came out with freshly sliced bananas on top. Mary Catherine was smiling throughout the meal, so she must have loved her breakfast. Either that, or the mimosas were doing their job!

Season Vegetable Frittata with Country Potatoes and Bacon at La Giara in New York, NY - Photo by Taste As You Go

As for me, I ordered the Season Vegetables Frittata with Country Potatoes ($8.00). The frittata was perfectly cooked and the combination of asparagus, zucchini, tomatoes, and mushrooms was just fantastic. This time, I most definitely cleaned my plate! While I can't speak for either Candice or Mary Catherine, I know that the service and the food at La Giara have convinced me to schedule a repeat visit in the future.

What are your plans for Memorial Day and will brunch play any part in your long weekend festivities?

How To: Caramelize Onions

Although my mother was not the biggest fan of cooking, in our years together in the kitchen before her passing, she left me with some favorite recipes, fond memories, and some non-traditional food addictions. With that said, it's time to confess that I absolutely love caramelized onions. And where do you suppose I got my fondness for them? That's right. From my mother. I can't even begin to count the number of times I walked into the kitchen to find her standing at the stove, making up a batch and then eating the onions straight out of the pan with her fingers because she was too eager to bother with a plate or a fork. It's really no surprise that I sometimes do the same thing when I want to snack on something sweet.

Onions - Photo by Taste As You Go

Caramelized Onions

Onions
Extra-virgin olive oil
1 tablespoon butter (optional)
Salt
Freshly ground black pepper
Water

I typically use yellow onions, but you can caramelize any kind of onion that you want. Once you've chosen your onion, slice the top and bottom off and then cut the onion in half from top to bottom. Remove the peel. Do this with all of the onions you plan on caramelizing (see Food Tip #1).

Slice each onion half into half-rings. You don't need to worry about the thickness of the slices as long as you keep in mind that thinner slices will cook faster than thicker ones. Place a large skillet on the stove and add enough extra-virgin olive oil to cover the bottom of the pan. For an added layer of flavor, I like to add butter to the olive oil, but that addition is completely optional. Heat the oil over a medium-high temperature, making sure that the pan doesn't get too hot.

How To Caramelize Onions - Photo by Taste As You Go

When the oil begins to ripple, add the onions. Stir the onions until they are coated with oil, then season with salt and pepper (see Food Tip #2). Reduce the heat to a medium temperature and continue to stir the onions every so often.

How To Caramelize Onions - Photo by Taste As You Go

After about a minute, the will start to brown in color and will start sticking a bit to the bottom of the pan. Don't panic! You want this to happen. Continue stirring and watching as the natural sugars are released and as the onions continue to deepen and darken in color.

How To Caramelize Onions - Photo by Taste As You Go

It's not unusual to have the onions stick to the bottom of the pan during this process. If you find that to be the case with your onions, you can deglaze the pan by pouring a bit of water (or broth, wine, balsamic vinegar, etc.) into the pan. Stir the onions and scrape the browned bits up off the bottom of the pan. Keep stirring until the onions have been released, allowing all of the added liquid to evaporate.

How To Caramelize Onions - Photo by Taste As You Go

Continue in this manner until the onions have reached the color, flavor (taste as you go!), and texture that you desire. Depending on how many onions you are caramelizing, this may take a while, so be patient. For the three onions pictured above, the caramelizing process took about 30 minutes. See how much those onions cooked down?

How To Caramelize Onions - Photo by Taste As You Go

Now, there are so many things you can do with caramelized onions (besides eating them directly out of the pan) that it's worth learning how to prepare them. The following recipes represent only a small fraction of possibilities: Caramelized Onion and Goat Cheese Cornbread; Flatbreads with Goat Cheese, Caramelized Onions, and Basil; Pork Chops with Braised Fennel and Caramelized Onions; Pizza Blanco; Sage and Caramelized Onion Risotto Cups; Savory Pumpkin-Caramelized Onion Muffins. Also, just think how amazing these caramelized onions would be on top of those grilled meats you'll be preparing this Memorial Day Weekend!

Stay tuned to see how I used these caramelized onions! So, what do you do with caramelized onions?

Food Tip #1: Onions reduce in volume quite a bit during the caramelizing process, so I generally allow one medium-sized onion per person.

Food Tip #2: Adding a pinch of salt to the onions will speed up the caramelizing process by drawing out some of the moisture in the onions. That moisture will eventually evaporate during cooking.

New Website Design and an Award

Adopt a Blogger Button
Being able to participate in the Adopt a Blogger program and having Sara of Ms. Adventures of Italy as my mentor has already done me a world of good. She keeps giving me wonderful things to think about as I continue to blog and as I continue to carve out a niche for myself. While I'm still figuring out a satisfactory answer to Sara's first question ("What do you spend time discovering, finding, tasting, sharing?"), I decided to tackle her second question head-on: "What's one area where you'd like to improve?"

My answer was actually two-fold: to improve upon the originality of my recipes and to improve upon Taste As You Go's website design. Obviously, the first part of my answer is going to take time. But I knew I could work on the second part of my answer if I allowed myself enough time to focus on the task. It turns out that being stuck at home on a Saturday with some random stomach bug gave me all the time I needed to revamp the website.

Honestly, I've been wanting to give the blog a facelift after only a few months of writing. I wanted something simple and clean that avoided too much clutter in the sidebar. I wanted something that would allow my pictures to pop and to attract the eyes of my readers. And, damn it, I wanted a header image that would reinforce the fact that Taste As You Go is, indeed, a food blog. After fiddling around for a couple of hours, here's what I came up with:

Taste As You Go Header Image

Oh, but I didn't stop there! For those who read Taste As You Go in a feed aggregator or for those who receive updates via email, be sure you click through to see the updates I've made to the blog design!

Sisterhood Award
The unveiling of the site's new design seems like the perfect time to discuss the Sisterhood Award that was given to me by Sue of Food Network Musings. I met Sue at the very first Foodbuzz Featured Publishers event I attended, which also happened to be the event where I won a gift certificate for dinner at The River Cafe! She was, in my opinion, the three Fs -- friendly, funny, and forward. Sue was an immediate new friend and I knew I could count on her to get up to the front and to get the perfect pictures of all of the food and to get Chef Steelman to answer all of her answers (and then some). Seriously, I should be the one passing on this award to Sue because she so openly welcomed a new food blogger into the fold and started offering advice and tips without blinking an eye. Thank you, Sue!

The Sisterhood Award is for our blogging sisters who show great attitude and gratitude. And with the Award comes the rules:
  1. Put the logo on your blog or post.
  2. Nominate up to ten blogs which show great attitude and/or gratitude.
  3. Be sure to link to your nominees within your post.
  4. Let the nominees know they have received this award by commenting on their blog or sending them an email.
  5. Remember to link to the person from whom you received the award.
I'd like to pass the Sisterhood Award to the following:
  1. Joan from FOODALOGUE
  2. Gail from The Pink Peppercorn
  3. Jo from The Adventures of Kitchen Girl
  4. Shelby from The Life and Loves of Grumpy's Honeybunch
Thank you, ladies, for being such an inspiration!

What do you think of Taste As You Go's new design? Who do you find inspirational? Leave a comment and let me know!

Food2 Launch Party at the Food Network Kitchen

Food2 Logo
(Logo courtesy of Food2)

This may sound horrible to say, but, sometimes, I am in awe of myself. Actually, it would probably be more accurate to say that, sometimes, I am in awe of my life. There are days when I have to stop and ask myself, "How the hell did you get here?" I asked myself that very question as I was checking my coat at the sign-in table at the Food Network Kitchen for the Food2 Launch Party on May 1st. Taste As You Go hasn't even celebrated its one-year anniversary, yet there I was, in the Food Network Kitchen.

I admit it. I was a little intimidated. I was there alone and didn't recognize anyone and spent the first few minutes wandering around like a lost little lamb. Until Stephane from Zen Can Cook spotted me. At last! A friend!

We spent the evening being sufficiently overfed by the insistent servers who gave us practically no time to enjoy the food they were passing around.

Country Ham and Biscuit Appetizer at the Food2 Launch Party - Photo by Taste As You Go

The Country Ham and Biscuit appetizers looked innocent enough, but when I took a bite, I discovered that the biscuit had been spread with a combination of mayonnaise and mustard, two of my least favorite condiments in the world. Needless to say, I only had the one bite and avoided that tray for the rest of the night. Only the bartender knows what happened to the uneaten portion of my Country Ham and Biscuit appetizer.

Mutton Sliders - Photo by Taste As You Go

Preparing the Mutton Sliders - Photo by Taste As You Go

The Mutton Sliders were a nice surprise and were served on grilled buns and topped with caramelized onions. Though, every time I was asked whether I wanted another Mutton Slider, I kept thinking about that scene in The Princess Bride when Miracle Max is talking about MLTs (Mutton, Lettuce, and Tomato sandwiches). After the decadence of the Mutton Sliders, I was impressed by the simplicity of the Grilled Cheese Sandwiches. Man, they were buttery and delicious.

There were other appetizers floating around, of course, but I was too busy eating and chatting it up with new friends, including Dave from Eating in Translation, to take pictures of them. I also met Mike from GreasyGuide.com and Claire from Colloquial Cookin'. And, yes, despite the fact that I was running the Revlon Run the following morning, I allowed myself a glass of wine. Okay, okay. Two glasses of wine. But I was drinking plenty of water, too!

One of the highlights of the evening for me was getting the chance to meet Kelsey Nixon (from Season 4 of The Next Food Network Star) and Spike Mendelsohn (from Season 4 of Top Chef)!

With Kelsey Nixon from The Next Food Network Star at the Food2 Launch Party - Photo by Taste As You Go

With Spike from Top Chef at Food2 Launch Party - Photo by Taste As You Go

I had the opportunity to speak with Kelsey for a bit, and she's absolutely adorable. We bonded right away because we're both on the short side (*wink*). Kelsey and Spike were at the Launch Party to promote their Food2 series, Kelsey & Spike Cook, which was playing on the televisions in the kitchen so all of the attendees could get a sneak peek. If you haven't had the chance to see the show yet, here's Episode 1 - Grilled Steak:

I would have been content to go home right then and there but right after I took that picture with Spike, there was an announcement about dessert. How could I go home before eating dessert?

Whoopie Pies - Photo by Taste As You Go

Light and fluffy Whoopie Pies! I tried to be good and only eat one, but I swear, they must have trained the servers in skills of master persuasion because I was "convinced" to eat at least four. I figured it would be okay since I could run away those extra calories over the course of the next day's 5K.

With Adam (The Amateur Gourmet), Michelle, and Zach (Midtown Lunch) - Photo by Taste As You Go

As I was picking up my coat and getting ready to leave, I snagged Adam from The Amateur Gourmet, who also has a series on Food2, appropriately called The Amateur Gourmet, and Zach from Midtown Lunch for one more picture. As you can see, we were very happy by the end of the night. While I can't speak for them, I definitely enjoyed the event and am grateful that I had the opportunity to attend.

So, have you checked out Food2 yet?
