As far as firsts go, I couldn't have asked for a better first Christmas for us a family of three. Instead of rushing from one house to the next in an attempt to see as many family members as possible and putting a ton of miles on our car, we slowed down and stayed close to home. It was such a special treat to wake up in our own beds on Christmas morning!
Caroline won't remember it, but Stephen and I made sure to give her a thorough introduction to the spirit of the season and the magic of Santa Claus. We also began laying the groundwork for what will, hopefully, become our holiday traditions and reflected on how humbling it will be to watch her pass along some (or all!) of those traditions to her own family someday.
Despite not celebrating Christmas with extended family this year, we weren't completely disconnected. Our phones buzzed intermittently throughout the day as we exchanged text messages and sent each other photos and reminisced about holiday memories from our respective childhoods.
Of course, Stephen and I couldn't help but think about the last time we were able to bring a good number of family members together -- Caroline's baptism in Philadelphia. Family and friends traveled from near and far to celebrate that special milestone in her life with us, and once the church service concluded, we gathered for lunch at West Avenue Grille in Jenkintown.
Our party was large enough to take over the room at the front of the restaurant, which was nice because that meant we didn't have to worry about disturbing other diners as we milled about and socialized. Plus, the room had tons of natural light thanks to two walls of windows, so it didn't feel as if we were being sequestered from the rest of the world.
Dan Katz, Director of Operations, assisted us as we planned the menu and made sure we had everything we needed the day-of. Both he and the staff were a pleasure to work with, and our guests were all thrilled with the food choices:
We also had an insane dessert platter with the most delicious brownie bites I've had in a long time, but I didn't want our guests to wait a moment longer for dessert while I tried to capture the perfect shot. You're going to just have to trust me on this one -- order the dessert!
There's always a lot to think about when planning an event like this, but the team at West Avenue Grille made everything come together so nicely for us. We didn't have to worry about a thing and were able to focus on our guests and to enjoy the afternoon.
